Audition Prep – All South Jersey Junior High Solo – Franz Simandl, Etude No. 16
Here is a performance of Etude No. 16 in Bb major from the 30 Etudes for Double Bass written by Franz Simandl.
Who Was Simandl?
Simandl was an incredible bassist, teacher, and his influence is far reaching today. His book the New Method for Double Bass is essentially one of the standard methods used for learning the bass. When I first started learning the bass this was the method by which I began studying. It takes you methodically through the bass covering every aspect of the bass. Simandl's studies are invaluable for any student.
The Etude
Set in the key of Bb major.
Note the use of scales and arpeggio patterns in this etude. Also, note the syncopation and marcato articulation throughout. I tried to add some dynamic contrast, especially when ascending. Keep a steady rhythm throughout the piece.
I hope this demonstration helps.
Cheers
